John DuPont Scholarship / Grant

This scholarship honors the life and spirit of John “Possum Belly” DuPont. John was a devoted member of the paddling community, he completed the legendary Texas Water Safari more than thirty times—an achievement that symbolizes his lifelong love for the river.
John was easy to recognize with his big smile under his old cowboy hat and his antique red Suburban named “Big Red.” What stood out most was his generosity with his time and knowledge. John was happiest mentoring novices on the river. Each bend, rock, or rapid had a name and a story of how it got there. Most days on the river, you could find John paddling next to a wide-eyed, green paddler preparing for their first safari, listening to him tell story after story of his life on the river. Much more than 260 miles worth.
Beyond the riverbanks, John cherished time with his family. Whether he was smoking his famous brisket in the backyard, camping under the stars, or traveling with his wife and daughters to her native France, he found joy in bringing people together.

The John DuPont Scholarship/Grant carries forward John’s spirit of mentorship, community, and love for the river by supporting paddlers who share those same values. The scholarship/grant provides financial assistance to support individuals and initiatives that enhance conservation, river projects, and the paddling community.
